Historical Note

Through the efforts of David Gray, Ohio Labor Project, and Orien C. Brown, President of Local 6529, United Steelworkers of America (USWA), these records arrived on March 2, 1981, at the American History Research Center, Kent State University.

Local 6529 of the USWA was formed in March, 1964, and is affiliated with the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL/CIO). It is also a member of the Trumbull County Federation of Labor. The members of Local 6529 are employed at the Taylor-Winfield Corporation in Warren, Ohio, a company that produces welding machinery, induction heating and metal forming equipment as well as automated assembly lines.

Although Local 6529 did not come into existence until 1964, there is in the collection some material pertaining to the USWA’s organizing efforts in 1963, when the National Labor Relations Board ordered union representation elections to be held. Reference is also made in these records to an earlier organizing attempt on the part of the USWA, in the late 1940’s, which failed. Prior to the authorization of the USWA to act as bargaining agent for the employees of Taylor-Winfield, an independent company union had existed.

Scope and Content

The primary categories of materials in this collection are correspondence, in both general and subject areas, contract agreements and negotiation materials, and records of grievances and arbitration proceedings. These records are arranged first by categories and then ordered chronologically in the case of general files and alphabetically in the case of subject files. In addition, there are two oversize bound volumes of minutes from the regular membership meetings, covering the period from 1964 through 1974. These volumes also contain monthly financial reports.

This collection, studied in conjunction with the records of USWA Locals 1307, 1375 and 2243 in Trumbull County, and Local 1617 in Mahoning County, would be of value to researchers interesting in the 717 and 730 of the International Union of Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers, this collection would be interest to persons researching labor affairs in the Warren area. The records of Local 6529 are also useful for revealing the methods and procedures followed in organizing a local union in an already-established industrial operation.
