Abstract:  This collection covers the history and origin of The Office of Continuing Education. This collection includes brochures and guides, correspondence, of the Kent State University Office of Continuing Education (OCE), as well as newsletters, photographs, reports, data, and statistics.

History of the Kent State University Office of Continuing Education:  The Kent State University Office of Continuing Education, as a unit, dates to 1972 when it was founded as the Division of Continuing Education. In 1979 it became the College of Special Programs then, in 1986, the College of Continuing Studies (CCS). In 2008, CCS was redefined as the Office of Continuing and Distance Education (OCDE) and its mission expanded to include administrative, technical, and marketing support for online courses and degree programs. In July 2022, a reorganization moved the Office of Continuing and Distance Education to the Lifelong Learning unit, and the name changed to the Office of Continuing Education (OCE). The Office of Continuing Education has provided education courses and programs for working professionals, senior adults, and youths, and business and industry. It consists of any program outside of the regular, conventional degree programs of the university, including credit and non-credit workshops, conferences, non-credit courses, institutes, seminars, and other special programs. This may include in-service programs in professional and occupational fields, vocationally or avocationally oriented and for general interest. 

Scope and Content:  The OCE records span the years 1965-2015. The bulk of the collection contains brochures and guides which include course offerings and schedules, and program descriptions. Documents and correspondence related to the formation of the unit are included. The remainder of the materials are newsletters, photographs, reports, data, and statistics. Please note that some of the photographs in this collection are from an art class that includes a nude model.

Statement of Arrangement:  The collection is a single series organized alphabetically by the type of material and then chronologically within each category of material.
