Gym Annex Controversy records
History of the Tent City records
In November of 1976, University administrators approved a new gym facility partially situated on the site of the Kent State shootings of 1970. Students, encouraged at a rally the following May by comedian and activist Dick Gregory, lawyer William Kunstler, and Vietnam War veteran and author Ron Kovic, began to protest the decision to build on this site. Several organizations were formed such as the May 4 Task Force, the May 4 Coalition, and the May 4 Observance committee. These groups issued demands, circulated flyers and petitions, and protested the construction of the gym. Eventually, some of these protesters pitched tents on the proposed building site and and stayed for over 60 days sparking protests and counter protests among members of the university and the community. Court battles ensued and nearly 200 people were eventually arrested and forcibly removed from the site. A full chronology of the gym annex protests can be found on our website here.
Scope and Content
This collection contains materials from the Gym Annex (Tent City) controversy of the late 1970s. It documents the history of the incidents surrounding these protests and the eventual construction of the Gym Annex. It consists primarily of letters written to the university in support and opposition to the building of the gym, court records from legal cases surrounding the dispute, and petitions circulated in 1977 both supporting and opposing the construction. There are statements from various members of the Kent State community including faculty, administrators, and students as well as subject files on several aspects of the protests and construction. There are also bids and contracts from the companies that built the facility and university guidelines for the naming of buildings (a matter heavily disputed at the time). Additionally, there are news clippings, flyers, scrapbooks, documents from several committees which formed in response to the proposed gym site, and materials from the contentious May 4 anniversary of 1978.
