The papers document some of the administrative responses to the Kent State shootings, particularly the activities of the campus and government commissions created following the shootings.

Biography of George Urban

George Urban graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Kent State University in 1937. He taught secondary school in Ravenna Township before becoming the assistant editor of the magazine Industry Week. He served in the military from 1942 to 1962, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Urban was hired by Kent State University in 1965 as the Administrative Assistant to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He served in several positions at Kent State, including Director of Public Events, Executive Assistant to the President, and University Secretary. Urban also served on the Commission on KSU Violence following the Kent State shootings. He retired from Kent State University in 1983.

Scope and Content

This collection documents some of the administrative and governmental responses to the Kent State shootings. Materials include correspondence between George Urban and members of the Ohio House of Representatives regarding two visits to the Kent campus by subcommittees of the Ohio Select Legislative Committee on Campus Unrest, and an associated report of the subcommittee. The collection also contains a compilation of surveys and questionnaires conducted at Kent State following the shootings, and reports, papers, and statements by faculty and administrators. A draft of the Minority Report of the Commission on KSU Violence is also included.
