Historical Note

Four Way Books is a nonprofit literary press that publishes poetry and short fiction by both up-and-coming and established writers. Four Way publishes works chosen through its annual competitions, as well as publishing competition finalists. The two series that the organization originally established include the Intro Series, which selects first books; and the Award Series, which selects poets who have published at least one book. Four Way has also established other series throughout the 1990's, such as the Stahlecker Series. Four Way was established in 1992 by four writers, Martha Rhodes, Dzvinia Orlowsky, Jane Brox, and Helen Fremont.

Scope and Content

The materials donated cover the years 1992-2002. The first five series in the collection are papers that cover activities directly related to the workflow of the press. The last series in the collection includes the papers from the writers chosen in the annual competitions. The writers have their works published under one of the following series: Intro Series, Award Series, Stahlecker Series, or as a competition finalist under a general Poetry Series. The series that the writer won the competition for is listed in parentheses after the writer's name. The books "Precipe" (John Donoghue), "The Tension Zone" (Sarah Gorham), "The Theory and Function of Mangoes" (George Kalamaras), "Barbarism" (Molly McQuade), "Leaving Xaia" and "The Rules of Paradise" (D. Nurske), "Why the Ships are She" (Terri Ford), "Rogue Apostle" (Mary Jane Nealon), "Lush" (Frazier Russell), "Levis Poetry Prize #4", and "The Four Way Reader #2" were pulled from the collection and are located with the special collections.
