Biographical Note: Doug Moore was University Photographer at Kent State from July 1967 to March 9, 1987. He was born May 23, 1924 and lived in Kent from 1967 until 1987. He attended Antioch College and had hoped to become a chemical engineer. He served in World War II as a U.S. Navy test pilot. After returning to Ohio to complete his education, he began a newly chosen career in newspaper journalism. He worked for the Lorain Journal during the Korean War and moved from writing to photography. He then served as assistant chief photographer with the Toledo Blade until he moved to Kent. He joined Kent State University News and Information staff in July 1967 as chief photographer. He was described as a methodical photographer by his co-workers. He was known for making his artwork look natural by capturing feelings of an event, not just the action. James Michener used many of Moore's photos for his book on May 4, 1970, and Allen Ginsberg used one of his photos for the cover of a book. Moore received more than 20 awards for his photography from the Ohio News Photographers' Association and a citation for his support of education during his career as a photographer. He worked at Kent State University until his death on March 10, 1987, after a four-month battle with cancer.
