Abstract: This collection, dating from 1966-2021, consists mainly of documents, correspondence, ephemera, and other materials collected or created by Alan Canfora. Canfora was one of the nine wounded students at Kent State University on May 4, 1970. Most of the collection relates to the events and aftermath of the Kent State shootings, but other subjects include his political journey in Barberton, Ohio, and more.

Biography of Alan Canfora

Alan Canfora was one of nine students wounded on May 4, 1970, when the Ohio National Guard shot into a crowd of students demonstrating against the Vietnam War at Kent State University. He was waving a black flag in remembrance of his friend that had died overseas when he was struck by a bullet in the right wrist. Over the course of his life, he was acknowledged as a leader of the May 4 Movement as he gave speeches and interviews, facilitated multiple projects stemming from the aftermath of the shootings, and played a large part in the May 4 Task Force (M4TF), among other activist organizations. Canfora’s goal was to seek the truth about the events of that day, as well as justice for those who were slain and wounded.

Canfora was born in Barberton, Ohio in February 1949 to Anna and Albert Canfora. The oldest of four children, his sister, Roseann 'Chic' Canfora, was also present on May 4, and the two were part of the Kent 25 who were indicted by a special grand jury in Portage County for their participation in the demonstrations on campus. A plaintiff in a civil damages case against the Ohio National Guard and Governor James Rhodes, he attended every day of the sixteen weeks of trial proceedings in which a verdict in favor of the defendants was rendered in August 1975. A subsequent appeal overturned the verdict, which resulted in an out-of-court settlement in 1979. Canfora earned a bachelor's degree in general studies in 1972 and a Master of Library Science in 1980, both from Kent State University. As a graduate student, he helped to create the May 4 Task Force in the fall of 1975 to raise awareness about the shootings and their aftermath. Beginning in May 1977, he led a six-month mass campaign to prevent the construction of a gymnasium on the site of where one of the students had been wounded.

Throughout much of the 1980s and 1990s, he and members of the M4TF advocated for the erection of a memorial to the four students who were killed in the shootings, which culminated the monument's dedication in 1990 and the parking lot memorials in 1999. Canfora and a team comprised of Kent State architect, Michael Bruder, Professor Emeritus, Jerry Lewis, and project manager for the 50th Commemoration, Rod Flauhaus, spearheaded efforts to honor the nine wounded students by identifying where they were wounded on May 4. As a result of Canfora's advocacy and the team's extensive research, Kent State installed nine bronze markers in 2021 to represent the locations of wounded students.

In 1989, Canfora also founded and was the director of the Kent May 4 Center, a non-profit, educational entity that focused on advocacy for student activism.

In addition to his activism and May 4 commemorative work, Canfora served as the chairperson for the Barberton Democratic Party from 1992 to 2019. He also worked for the Summit County Board of Elections and Barberton Municipal Court. Canfora was the director at the Akron Law Library from 2011 until his death.

Canfora died on December 20, 2020 at the age of 71. He is survived by his wife, whom he met at a M4TF meeting, and their two children.

Scope and Content

Alan Canfora's collection includes correspondence, photographs, legal documents, newspaper clippings and publications, and artifacts from his time as a student at Kent State and his work with May 4 until his death. Also included are materials that Alan collected from others related to the Kent State shootings.
