Biographical Note: James Huebner was an undergraduate student at Kent State University in the late 1970s. He was an active participant in the May 4 Coalition, a group that was formed in response to the University’s decision to build a new gymnasium annex partially situated on the site of the Kent State shootings. As a member of the May 4 Coalition, Huebner protested the construction of this building. He was a resident of Tent City (or Tentropolis), an area of the building site where objectors camped out in tents in order to prevent construction. He also served as chairman of many of the mass meetings of the May 4 Coalition, before nearly 200 people were arrested and forcibly removed from the site in July of 1977.

Huebner graduated from Kent State University in 1982.

Scope and Content: The bulk of this collection contains papers relating to the Gym Annex Controversy (Tent City). Included are materials generated by the May 4 Coalition and other student groups that opposed the construction of the gym. The collection is composed of flyers, news releases, newsletters, letters to the editor, and other writings.
