Explore a revealing exhibit memorializing the controversial and protracted efforts to build Kent State’s May 4 Memorial. Numerous photographs, documents, letters, newspaper clippings, samples of memorial design submissions and architectural models of the memorial chart the difficulties of observing this public memory amidst deeply divided opinions about what happened and how the events should be remembered. Remembering the Contested May 4 Memorializing Process is curated by Tammy Clewell, Ph.D.,  professor of English, in collaboration with the May 4 Visitors Center. 

We are proud to announce that Tammy Clewell, Ph.D., has been selected as the inaugural Jerry M. Lewis May 4 lecturer. As part of the 52^nd Commemoration of May 4, she will present “Remembering the Contested May 4 Memorializing Process,” in collaboration with the May 4 Visitors Center. Clewell’s lecture will explore how remembering the contentious process of memorializing May 4, 1970 may help us put into practice the principles of plurality as we pursue a more equitable future. The Jerry M. Lewis May 4 lecture and luncheon will be held on May 2 from 11:30 a.m - 1 p.m. in the Kent Student Center Ballroom.
