History of Kent Hunger Task Force
The Kent Hunger Task Force (KHTF) was first assembled by an ecumenical group of churches in Kent, Ohio, with the intention of addressing and combating the issue of hunger in their city. Kent Social Services, Inc. (KSS) had recently realized that there were families in urgent need of food in Kent, but they did not have the funding to aid these families. Thus, the Lord's Pantry was established as a resource for these families, and the KHTF was organized with the purpose of supplying the Lord's Pantry through donations solicited from their congregations. Over the years, the Kent Hunger Task Force increased their reach, sponsoring local hunger programs and events, i.e. the annual Church World Service CROP Walk, to raise money and educate the public about the issue of hunger locally, nationally, and globally. A portion of the money raised was then returned to the sponsoring agency (KSS), which put it towards programs such as the KHTF Hot Meal Program. In 1996, the Kent Hunger Task Force ceased operations and transferred leadership of the Kent CROP Walk to the Kent Ministerial Association.
Scope and Content
The Kent Hunger Task Force records span the years 1975-1995, and contain materials related to KHTF sponsored events, meeting records, informational materials, clippings, and photographs. Also included are materials relating to the Lord's Pantry, an effort by Kent Social Services in conjunction with the KHTF, to provide food to local families in need. Although a portion of the materials are undated, they are from the late 20th century, as the KHTF was created in 1975 and ceased operations in 1996. A significant portion of the collection comprises materials from various years of the Kent CROP Walk, which was an event the KHTF regularly sponsored and participated in.
