Biographical Notes

O. F. Haymaker (1838-1907) son of J. D. and Mary (Olin) Haymaker, was a descendent of the first Haymakers that helped to establish Franklin Township. Along with farming his land, O. F. Haymaker taught school for thirty years, served as Portage County Commissioner in 1890, became treasurer of Kent Universalist Church in 1867, and was the president of the Portage County Horticultural Society, among other appointments. In 1862, O. F. Haymaker married Mary [Burlingame] Haymaker (1842-1926) of Geauga County. Together, they farmed land and were strong supporters of education throughout Portage County. The couple had three daughters (Ida, Cora, Lillie) and one adopted son (Edward).

Ida [Haymaker] Merrill (1863-1951), the daughter of O. F. and Mary Haymaker, married F. A. Merrill (1859-1916), a prominent figure in the history of Kent State Normal College, in 1882. They had four daughters.

In 1916, the daughter of Ida and F. A. Merrill, Mary [Merrill] Dumm (1889-1968), married George Dumm (1890-1966), a Kent dentist. The couple had been very active in the Kent and Twin Lakes community, including Mary Dumm's dedication to area hospital work, and George Dumm's participation in the Kent Rotary Club.

Their son, Robert Dumm (1918-2003) married Catherine [Edwards] Dumm (1918-2005) in 1942. Robert Dumm served as a medical officer during World War II in the U.S. Navy, shortly after their marriage, and later became a physician of internal medicine in Kent. Robert Dumm served on the Robinson Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, the Portage County Medical Society, and was a member of the Kent Rotary Club, alongside his father. Catherine Dumm served as president of the Kent Free Library Board, and was past Docent of the Kent State University Textile Museum. They had three children.

Scope and Content: This collection contains a large amount of correspondence and documents, as well as personal writings, clippings, photographs, books, and scrapbooks, spanning the 1820s to the 1980s. The items are arranged by series as outlined below, and chronologically within each series, with the bulk of the materials pertaining to O. F. Haymaker from the 1860s to 1900. The correspondence of Robert Dumm to George and Mary Dumm in the 1930s and 1940s also comprise a large portion of the collection. The bulk of the deeds and mortgages are attributed to Arvin Olin, the grandfather of O. F. Haymaker, and are the earliest items of the collection, beginning in 1825. While this collection covers four generations of the Haymaker, Merrill, Dumm family, it also provides a historical focus on the city of Kent and Portage County.
