Biographical Note: David Bash of Wilmot, Ohio in Stark County, served in the Civil War as a member of the Nineteenth Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry from 1861 to 1865. He rose quickly through the ranks of the Union Army. Mustered into Company F in 1861, he became Sergeant of Company F July 20, 1862. By July of 1863 he held the rank of 1st lieutenant in Company E. He held this position until February 1865 when he was appointed Captain of Company H. Company H took part in a number of battles including: Shiloh, Corinth, Liberty Gap, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, Rocky Face, Cassville, Picket's Mills, Kenesaw Mountain, Lovejoy's Station, Franklin, Nashville, and even joined General Sherman on his historic March to the Sea and the siege of Atlanta. David Bash remained Captain of Company H until the end of the Civil War and was mustered out with the rest of his Company October 24, 1865 at San Antonio, Texas.
Scope and Content: This collection consists mainly of official papers. As a Captain in the Union Army David Bash was required to keep very detailed records pertaining to his Company including: clothing and equipment reports, receipts for transferred stores, ordnance reports. The collection also includes Bash's personal papers regarding his promotions and eventual discharge. These materials date from December 31, 1861 to February 17, 1910.
Acquisition Information: The collection was purchased from The Bookseller, Inc., of Akron, Ohio, in 2005.
