Abstract: Jerry Lewis was professor of sociology from 1966 to 1996 at Kent State University, and witnessed the Kent State shootings on May 4, 1970. This collection includes correspondence, scholarly works, student papers, and Lewis' collection of materials related to the Kent State shootings and their aftermath.


Biography: Jerry M. Lewis (1937- ), professor emeritus of sociology, was a sociology professor at Kent State University from 1966 to 1996. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Cornell College, his Master's degree from Boston University, and his doctoral degree from the University of Illinois. Lewis was an eyewitness to the Kent State shootings on May 4, 1970, and he has since been involved in researching, memorializing, and lecturing about this tragic event. He has been interviewed numerous times by the local and national media about the shootings. He also has generously shared his experiences with countless numbers of students and visitors through presentations, interviews, and tours of the site of the shootings. A resident of Kent, Lewis was appointed to the Kent city council in January 1991.


Scope and Content: This collection contains the papers of Jerry M. Lewis relating to campus unrest in general, and the events of May 4, 1970, in particular. The collection includes subject files, scholarly publications by Lewis and others, clippings, artifacts, reports, and other materials created and collected by Lewis in the course of his career at Kent State University.


Restrictions on Access: Some information included in this collection is restricted due to the presence of information protected by privacy laws. This information has been redacted where present on documents in the collection. Un-redacted originals, in all cases, have been retained by Special Collections and Archives.

Separated Materials: General clippings about the Kent State shootings and related topics have been removed from this collection and will be integrated into the May 4 Clippings, Magazines, and Journal Articles collection.

USAR RET." Others are simply signed "P. Catania." Annotations generally reflect anti-Communist sentiments. This packet includes photocopies of items originally printed in the 1970s and early 1990s, several originating in the Buffalo, New York area, but apparently modified by Catania in or around 1995. References are made to contemporary figures such as Bill Clinton and the Gulf War. Jerry M. Lewis notes the material was unsolicited by him, but received by him in 1995.

    Scope and Content: Concerned Citizens of the Kent Community (CCC) was an organization formed in April 1969 in the aftermath of arrests and suspensions of students, several members of SDS, that resulted from a demonstration and occupation of the Music & Speech building on April 16, 1969. CCC was made up of a diverse group of faculty and students and focused on issues of due process and the rights and civil liberties of students on campus. This subject file includes flyers, memoranda, reports on the CCC campus referendum, clippings, and notes related to the aftermath of the Music & Speech building occupation event and CCC.
