African-American Songs (Large Format)
This grouping contains songs written by and about African-Americans including, but not limited to, a category of derogatory songs referred to as "coon songs."
The term "coon song" is often used to refer to a genre of songs written and performed by both blacks and whites containing derogatory racial images, stereotypes, language and caricatures of African-American people and culture. These songs, highly popular in the United States from 1880 through the early 1900s, were part of the Tin Pan Alley and minstrel performance traditions and included highly stereotyped black personas based on earlier musical characters such as "Zip Coon" and "Jim Crow." In these songs, African-Americans were portrayed as comic, lazy, dangerous, ignorant, sexually permissive, violent and in a host of other negative ways. The sheet music in this category has been collected for historical research purposes. For additional historical information on this group of songs, see James H. Dormon's article "Shaping the Popular Image of Post-Reconstruction American Blacks: The 'Coon Song' Phenomenon of the Gilded Age." American Quarterly. 40.4 (Oct-Dec, 1988): 450-471.
Please note that sheet music written by African-American composers will also be found elsewhere in the collection under the composer's name. For best results, use the search box on the Borowitz Sheet Music Collection home page to locate the individual composers you are seeking.
