Biographical Note: Mona Fletcher was born in Lowell, Massachusetts to Lewis Irving and Annie Abbie (Shedd) Fletcher on October 26, 1892. She received her B.S. in Education from Kent Normal School in 1921, her A.M. in Political Science from the University of Chicago in 1924 and her Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1948. Among Fletcher's many achievements was the fact that she was the first Kent alumnus to go on to graduate school. She also had the distinction at one time of having taught at Kent longer than any other person; from 1921-1963, a total of 42 years. Her accomplishments have been listed in numerous publications such as: Who's Who in America, 60th ed.; Who's Who of American Women, 1st ed.; and the Directory of American Scholars, 2nd ed. Fletcher published numerous reviews and articles and was also co-author of the book State Legislatures, published in 1954. In 1961, she authored and hosted two radio programs for Station WSDR in Sterling, Illinois. The first program, "As I See It," dealt with Dr. Fletcher's commentaries on current political events. The second program, "Let's Rediscover America," was a chronological analysis of American history. In 1958, Fletcher was the first woman to deliver the invocation and benediction at a KSU commencement. In 1960, she received the most distinguished faculty member award and the KSU Alumni Award. In addition, Fletcher was the first woman to serve on the national executive council for Pi Sigma Alpha, a political science honorary. In June 1963, she was named emeritus professor of Political Science. She died in Kent on February 5, 1965.
