- Abstract: This collection contains material relating to the teaching and research of Kent State University Political Science professor Richard W. Taylor, dating largely from the late 1960s-late 1980s. Much of Taylor's research pertains to the role of the ombudsman, with special focus on the ombudsman's role in modern Germany. Additional research by Western Reserve University professor Richard C. Spencer, on Maurice Maschke, an early 20th century Cleveland politician, and the role of the political spoils system is also contained in these papers.

Biography of Richard W. Taylor
Born in 1923, Richard W. Taylor received his A.B., A.M. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. During the 1950s and 1960s he taught Political Science at the University of Minnesota, Lehigh University, Coe College, the University of Iowa and Northwestern University. Taylor came to Kent State University in 1967 and served as the chairman of the Graduate Studies in Political Science program. Taylor continued to teach at Kent State University through the late 1980s.
Scope and Content
This collection contains material relating to the teaching and research of Kent State University Political Science professor Richard W. Taylor. The papers include scholarly articles and papers by Taylor, course material and student handouts, conference material, research and grant applications, and research correspondence dating from the late 1960s through the late 1980s. Materials also include publications from the International Ombudsman Institute. Additional research material includes transcripts of selected American political speeches taken from newspapers and dating from 1835 to 1864. The collection also contains original letters and petitions from political job seekers in Cleveland, Ohio, dating from 1908 and 1909, and original scrapbooks of newspaper articles about Maurice Maschke, an early 20th century Cleveland politician. The Cleveland material appears to have originally been collected by Western Reserve University professor Richard C. Spencer.
