History of the Kent State University Official Songbook Committee
The Kent State University Official Songbook Committee was a student-faculty committee appointed by University President Dr. George A. Bowman in the 1948-1949 school year. The committee included Professor Eric T. Griebling as the chairman, Dr. Ralph Hartzell, the head of the music department, and various student representatives. The committee was developed to revise the 1931 songbook, Official Songs of Kent State College, and to develop a new school songbook. Students were encouraged to submit their own work but due to the lack of student-body interest, the songbook took nearly four years to be released. The committee published the official Kent State University Songbook titled Songs in 1951.
Scope and Content
The Kent State University Official Songbook Committee records span the years 1922-1951 and contains songbooks, sheet music, minutes from meetings, correspondence to and from the committee, and audio recordings in record vinyl format. Sheet music forms the bulk of the collection and includes alumni songs, alma maters, love songs, hall songs, class songs, and fight songs that were submitted to the committee for review.
