Getting Straight
Directed by Richard Rush, 1970

The dark comedy Getting Straight was released in the days following the Kent State shootings and, though it is fictional, the film’s plot points got very close to the reality that unfolded at Kent State and Jackson State. The film follows graduate student Harry Bailey, a former student activist, Vietnam War veteran, who returns to college to complete a master’s degree, but gets distracted by the protests on campus as he attempts to conform to the establishment in order to earn his teaching credentials and graduate.

Presented by the May 4 Visitors Center with the May 4 Task Force
