Biography of David Wayne

David Wayne (1914-1995), born Wayne McMeekan, was a theater, movie and television actor. He originated roles in Broadway productions including Finian's Rainbow (1947), Mister Roberts (1948) and The Teahouse of the August Moon (1953). He won two Tony Awards and was an early member of the Actors Studio. His movie work included Adam's Rib (1949), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), The Tender Trap (1955), and The Andromeda Strain (1971). His career spanned the 1930s through the 1980s.

Wayne was born in Traverse City, Michigan and attended Western Michigan University. He worked as a statistician in Cleveland, Ohio and performed in amateur theater there. In 1936 he took his first professional theatrical job in a Shakespeare repertory company, and in 1938 moved to New York City. He married Jane Gordon, born Jennie Trigs, in 1941. They had three children, twin girls and a boy. During World War II Wayne served as an ambulance driver in North Africa. Wayne died in Santa Monica, California in 1995.

Scope and Content

The David Wayne papers span the years 1934 to the early 1990s. Wayne's work on many theatrical, movie and television productions is documented through periodical clippings, photographs, telegrams and programs. This collection also includes a small number of reel-to-reel audio tapes and phonograph records on which Wayne performed. Short essays Wayne wrote on acting and his home life for popular publications in the 1950s and 1960s are included as well. Additionally, there is material relating to Wayne's family and personal life including family photographs and amateur-movies.
